Some of the earliest computers used a punched card memory system – literally storing information on cards with holes punched out. Now researchers have found a way to apply the same concept to DNA.

DNA sequences have often been suggested as a form of data storage but many methods for doing this are painstaking or expensive – such as synthesising new DNA in the lab.
