These days green-collar is fast becoming the new white-collar, and lots of people are looking for a piece of the action. After all, what’s not to like? It’s a burgeoning area in which you can spend more time in the great outdoors, feel good about doing your bit to save the planet – and take home a good salary.

Utility companies, regulators, government bodies, research centres and the construction industry all employ environmental professionals. As the carbon economy has sprung up, so have the jobs in carbon trading and finance.

From carbon capture to waste management to engineering, there are so many sectors under that great big green umbrella that your first task is to work out where your skills and expertise fit in.

Get yourself off to a good start with our whistle-stop tour of three of the biggest sectors:

Renewable and low-carbon energy

Sustainability

Legislation and regulation

Tales from the frontline

Our tour should give you a flavour of the great diversity of opportunities under the green jobs umbrella. We couldn’t cover everything, so take a look at these case studies from other areas:

Peter Dale, project developer at Ecosecurities, a carbon-trading company

Trevor Salmon, head of the international species protection team at the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Helen Bonsor, hydrogeologist at the British Geological Survey

Adinah Shackleton, environmental consultant at Environmental Resources Management
