SEVEN of Europe’s biggest chemicals firms called last week for the European
Community to ‘resolve its many current biotechnology policy initiatives’
into a clear system for registering and patenting new biotechnology products.

The firms – Britain’s ICI and Unilever, Ferruzzi, Hoechst and Rhone-Poulenc
from within the Community, and Monsanto and Sandoz from outside it – also
want a Community-wide market for biotechnological products, and ‘market
authorisation based only on scientific criteria of quality, safety and efficacy’.
