The rise and rise of collaborative writing

THE American publication Science & Engineering Indicators 1989 reports that scientists who write their papers alone form an increasingly
select club. As the graph shows, single-authored papers accounted in 1986
for 19 per cent of those published, against 33 per cent in 1973.
