THE General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences has approved
a new statute converting the body from an organ of the state into a private
society. The statute will now be presented to parliament for approval. The
academy was highly critical of the government’s proposal to establish a
Science Research Council to distribute research grants. It resolved to establish
an alternative system of financing science.
