LAST Monday three scientists from Australia, West Germany and the US
were awarded jointly the first Australia Prize at Parliament House in Canberra.
The prize, valued at A$250,000 (Pounds sterling 125 000), was awarded to
Allen Kerr of the University of Adelaide, Jeff Schell from the Max Planck
Institute in Cologne and Eugene Newster from the University of Washington
in Seattle.

Over the past 20 years, the scientists have studied crown gall disease,
a disease that attacks agricultural crops worldwide. The Australia Prize
will be awarded in a different area of science each year.
