PRESIDENT George Bush wants to see an American flag flying on the surface
of Mars by 2019. Bush revealed his dream in a speech to the Texas A&I
University last week.

Bush first said that his national goal for the US’s space programme
is to send people to Mars last July on the twentieth anniversary of the
Apollo moon landing.

He did not give any timetable, but he directed the National Space Council
to work out the costs and timing of the enterprise. So far, no official
figure exists for the cost of sending people into the Solar System, but
unofficial figures put the cost as billions of dollars over decades.
