New Hampshire, a generally conservative state with the official motto
‘Live Free or Die’, wants to host clinical trials in the US of the ‘abortion
pill’ RU-486. The state legislature passed a resolution last week asking
Roussel-Uclaf, the French company that sells RU-486, to begin such trials.
Roussel-Uclaf has refused to seek approval for RU-486 in the US because
of the ‘political climate’ opposed to abortion.

The vote is the latest in a series of attempts by local authorities
in the US to persuade Roussel-Uclaf to enter the US market. The mayor of
New York City, David Dinkins, sent a letter last month to mayors of other
large cities, asking them to join a ‘campaign’ in favour of clinical testing
for RU-486. A resolution similar to New Hampshire’s will soon be debated
in California’s state assembly.
