Arts / Paintings by Sir Roy Calne at the Barbican Centre, London

27 July 1991

Paintings by Sir Roy Calne, professor of surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital,
Cambridge, are on show at the Barbican Centre, London, from 24 July to 11
August (closed 27 July to 2 August). The exhibition is called ‘The Gift
of Life’. It will move from London to Basle, Switzerland, where it will
be housed by Sandoz Pharma from 6 to 20 November.

Calne, who pioneered methods of preventing grafts from being rejected
by introducing the use of immunosuppressant drugs, paints his transplant
patients and colleagues as well as landscapes and street scenes from his
travels. All proceeds from the show go to a children’s liver transplant
charity.
