Britain’s national health service could save £1 billion a year
if it researches methods of health care and chooses the best and most cost-effective.
This is the view of Michael Peckham, director of research and development
in the NHS, who launched the service’s R&D strategy this week.

Peckham named his 27-member committee at the launch. It includes academics,
senior doctors and nurses, health service managers and industry representatives.
It also includes health economists and a lay representative. The central
committee will bring together the work of regional research committees.
