Helmut Kohl, on a visit to the US this week, announced the creation
of a joint German-American Academy of Sciences, to maintain scientific ties

of the German Foreign Office. ‘There is a need for scientific organisations
which go beyond the national framework’, says Koch, ‘it’s the only way global
problems can be addressed.’
