One of Europe’s top science jobs looks certain to go to a Briton. Christopher
Llewellyn-Smith of the University of Oxford has been proposed as director-general
of CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva.

If his appointment is confirmed, Llewellyn-Smith will take over from
the Italian Carlo Rubbia at the end of next year. His biggest task would
be building a new particle accelerator, the £600 million Large Hadron
Collider.
