Graham Farmelo, writing about the 50th anniversary of the nuclear age
(‘The day Chicago went critical’, 28 November), refers to the ‘physicists
Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman’ and the ‘chemist Lise Meitner’. Strange!
Hahn and Strassman were chemists and Meitner was a physicist. Key aspects
of their story can be told through Meitner’s papers, now housed in the Churchill
Archives Centre in Cambridge, where they are currently being catalogued.
