Do you have a bright idea for how to remove ammonia from industrial
effluent? It could be worth $1 million. That’s the prize offered by the
chemicals giant Monsanto for the person who comes up with a cost-effective
process.

The presence of ammonia in waste interferes with recovery and recycling
of other chemicals in the effluent, says the company. Monsanto’s researchers
have been unable to devise a cost-effective way to remove it and so the
company pumps thousands of tonnes of ammonia-laced water into boreholes.
