Is that a moonrock round your neck?

12 November 1994

FASHION-CONSCIOUS Americans are sporting ties decorated with crystalline
“microscapes” of vitamins, DNA, medicines and pesticides. The patterns
available include one of moonrock. Stonehenge, the New York-based company
selling the ties, recently presented a set to Buzz Aldrin, the second man to
set foot on the Moon.

The idea of emblazoning ties, T-shirts, record sleeves, giftwrapping and
sportswear with “microscapes” came from Michael Davidson, a biophysicist at
Florida State University. Davidson produces the images by photographing
crystals through microscopes. He achieves special effects using film emulsions
and light filters. Davidson says that the most popular patterns are DNA,
vitamin C and zidovudine, better known as AZT. Aficionados can even buy a
“vitamin collection” of eight ties.
