IN THE midst of all those gullible people, Netropolitan cannot decide whether to be encouraged or disheartened to discover what a cynical bunch New Scientist readers are – they even think that we’re trying to pull the wool over their eyes.

The cover feature of the 1 April issue (“Faster than the speed of light”) was discussed widely on the Net by all manner of skeptical people, trying to decide whether or not it was a joke. Postings were spotted in alt.fan.dr who, rec.soc.mensa and a number of physics sites.

To put the record straight: it wasn’t an April fool … honest. But whether the entire issue was a joke-free zone is another matter.
