YOU can get the history of the Net straight from the horse’s mouth at
gopher://gopher.isoc.org:70/00/internet/history/how.internet.came.to.be, which
hosts a lengthy interview with Vinton Cerf, who is widely considered to be the
father of the Net. The text is a little biased towards Cerf’s academic work but
is still a good read. Netropolitan wonders how he feels his baby is turning out
as it heads rapidly towards adolescence.

And for the completists, there is also a history of how Usenet came about on
http://www.amdahl.com/internet/events/usenet-history.txt.
