Review : Save your life

Cutting the speed of traffic would save lives as well as fuel, cut carbon
dioxide emissions and reduce the distance people drive by car, say Stephen
Plowden and Mayer Hillman in Speed Control and Transport Policy (Policy Studies
Institute, £14.95 ISBN 0 85374 692 3). The argument is original and
stimulating. The Department of Transport will, of course, ignore it. Which goes
a long way toward explaining the mess we’re in.
