George C. Williams is a fortunate man. Thirty years ago he wrote Adaptation
and Natural Selection, a classic text showing that evolution functions primarily
at the level of individual organisms rather than groups or species. Now he has
written the preface to a new edition (Princeton University Press,
£10.95/$14.95, ISBN 0 691 02615 7), with canny reflections on the
widespread acceptance of his ideas.
