THE conference on updating the Berne convention on copyright is now under
way. The proposals to require everyone to get explicit permission before looking
at a Web page are provoking a storm of protest on the Net.

The National Writers Union wants the conference delayed so a wider debate can
take place. See what it has to say at:
http://www.igc.apc.org/nwu/anc/wipo1.htm.

For a huge list of objections about the proposals, see the site at
http://www.public-domain.org/copyright/copyright.html. Even some lawyers are
objecting, and it could be a nice little earner for them. You can join the
debate using the site’s feedback form.
