Review : Lingua made franker

It seems like an odd idea—a heavily illustrated book about language.
But Chomsky for Beginners by John Maher (Icon Books, £8.99, ISBN 1 874166
42 0) gives an accessible, if one-sided, introduction to the work of this major
linguist and social activist. The generous use of examples and historical
background make for an interesting read—if you can deal with the
decoupage.
