Review : Art and the atom

Visual imagery is central to science as well as art. Physicist and historian
Arthur Miller presents Insights of Genius (Springer-Verlag, £15.95, ISBN 0
387 94671 3) as an attempt to underpin this observation with some theory. But
his ill-tempered dismissal of those who see science as a social process reveals
a subplot. What he actually wants to say is that science does not just deal in
images. Atoms and stuff are real. Trust me, I’m a scientist.
