JAPAN says it will plough ahead with its nuclear power programme, despite
protests following the accident and subsequent cover-up at its pilot
fast-breeder reactor, Monju, a year ago (This Week, 6 January 1996, p
9).

The annual Nuclear Power White Paper says that the fast-breeder programme and
plutonium recycling remain the cornerstones of Japan’s long-term energy plans.
It urges the government to work harder at gaining “the trust of the people”.
