DILAPIDATED laboratories in English universities may get a facelift in
1998.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England last week distributed
£3.4 billion to the country’s universities.

The money is mainly for teaching and research, but about £70 million
has been earmarked for special initiatives. Brian Fender, head of the HEFCE,
says that the refurbishment of laboratories should be the next priority.

“The message that I get is that the problem is particularly acute in
chemistry and biology,” he says.
