The US Customs Service is testing a handheld detector designed to catch
smugglers. The detector can distinguish different metals and see inside sealed
containers. An eddy current sensor measures the flow of electrical currents
through a metal and from the rate of flow it can identify the metal. A second
sensor transmits ultrasound and by timing the echoes works out the distribution
of objects inside a container.
