The British computer company Elonex, of London, has developed an interactive
doll that speaks when spoken to and also crawls and walks (WO 97/32300).

A computer runs a control program from a CD-ROM and communicates with the
doll through coded pulses transmitted either by an infra-red, or a radio,
link.

The computer can make the doll move and generate speech from a loudspeaker
hidden in the doll’s body. A microphone in the doll listens to the child,
feeding messages back to the computer which then selects a suitable
response.
