Open the pages of To Your Good Health by Dr Thomas Stuttaford and you may
hear just a faint echo of Florrie Ford’s music hall song, “A little of what you
fancy does you good”. The book is a well-chambered and decanted draught of
common sense. Miss Ford, however, was presumably not aware that a modest alcohol
intake can protect against strokes, clear the arteries and raise the sperm
count. It’s published just in time to wave at the anti-cakes-and-ale brigade at
Christmas. In all moderation, of course. Published by Faber & Faber,
£7.99, ISBN 0571190952.
