The US Food and Drug Administration will not ban the transplantation of
animal organs into humans, despite calls to do so from leading researchers
(This Week, 24 January, p 5).

“Will there be a moratorium? No, we do not plan to do that,” Michael
Friedman, acting FDA commissioner, told a meeting held near Washington DC last
week to discuss xenotransplantation. Regulators will continue to review
proposals on a case-by-case basis.
