This is the book for many a university course in the US, Principles of
Conservation Biology by Gary Meffe, C. Ronald Carroll and others. Replete with
examples, well-referenced and intelligently organised, its 19 chapters guide the
student through the subject, from species-level considerations, sustainable
development, stopping at, among others, conservation of genetic diversity,
management planning for reserves, ecological restoration and indigenous
community involvement in conservation planning. Though British lecturers may
want a Eurocentric counterbalance to its American focus, it is definitely worth
