Netropolitan : Travelling hopefully

21 February 1998

So, you’re an armchair traveller. You
prefer the CD-ROM tour of the British Museum to the real thing. You’d rather
e-mail your friends than go to meet them. Feel like a loser?

Suffer no longer. There are plenty of Web sites to reassure you
that avoiding reality is a sensible choice. Take flying. Say you fancied a jaunt
around Cuba. A quick visit to the Aviation Safety Web Pages,
http://www.pongnet.nl/avnsafety/, will put you off that idea. Cubana de
Aviación, the country’s national airline, has lost a total of 19 aircraft
over the years. The most recent was in July 1997, when a Russian-built Antonov
took off from the island’s southern tip and just crashed into the sea, killing
all 44 passengers.
