Engineers in the telecoms division of the French-owned company Alcatel have
transmitted a signal 200 000 kilometres along an optical fibre, using optical
regenerators to produce a clean signal. Unlike optical amplifiers, which boost
noise as well as the signals, the regenerators extract the digital signals from
noise before amplifying them.
