Artificial eyes are helping to test the helmet displays used by fighter
pilots. Sira Electro-Optics of Chislehurst in Kent developed the eye to test the
displays that project information onto the pilot’s visor. The eye uses a
solid-state sensor in place of a retina and an aperture that mimics the pilot’s
pupil. The artificial eye will be used to assess and tune helmet-mounted
displays before they are put into service.
