Now that the quiz show Mastermind has gone from Britain’s TV screens,

Finish for a flavour of the series. Sadly, the book contains little more than
venues, contestants’ names, occupations, subjects and scores. Why were there so
few science questions? Because of the difficulty of setting the right
level—and “the adjudication of the answers to `definition’ questions was a
