There is no lack of ideas or indignation over the state of Britain’s
National Health Service. It already mops ups a big slice of the money raised by
taxation, while services continue to deteriorate. The only solution is to
introduce charges as other European countries have without the skies falling.
All this is familiar, so, too, are the arguments in John Willman’s A Better
State of Health. Its value lies in its clarity and fairness, much needed above
the contemporary rancour on the subject. Published by Profile Books,
£8.99, ISBN 1861970897.
