Talk as you surf

People in Britain will soon be able to chat on their phone as they explore
the Internet. On 15 September, BT launches a system that converts an analogue
phone line into two digital and two analogue lines. Your computer connects to
the Net via an ISDN card or “terminal adapter” rather than a modem. At 64 or 128
kilobits per second, ISDN is faster than normal modems. The conversion costs
£116, and the line rental for the service, called Highway, is £40
per month. This includes £15 worth of free calls.
