Fish are like wallflowers at a disco: they shy away from bright flashing
lights. But this could save their lives.

When fish are sucked into the water inlets of hydroelectric power plants they
face certain death, and also damage the generators. So Flash Technology
Corporation of America has patented a way to keep fish away using a strobe light
(W0 98/25450).

The strobe sits in a submerged chamber in the dam near the
inlets and the bright flashing light disturbs the fish, scaring them off.
