American research in Antarctica hit an embarrassing snag last week when a
Hercules C-130 supply plane wedged itself in the ice.

While taxiing at Siple Dome in Western Antarctica, 1200 kilometres from the
McMurdo Station, one of the aircraft’s skis jammed into a crevasse. No one was
injured, but balloons will be needed to haul the plane from the ice.
