The plates are good and the text comprehensive, but the American Bird
Conservancy’s Birds of North America is a frustrating field guide. The long,
thin shape is awkward to use, but even worse is the curious species grouping
(ranging from “ground-walkers” to “conical bills”). It doesn’t work. Published
