EMI’s Abbey Road studios have taken two old albums by rock band Marillion and
given them a new twist. Clutching at Straws and Afraid of
Sunlight are being re-released as “enhanced CDs” with extra, encrypted
tracks which an ordinary CD player ignores. But when they are played on a
computer with Internet access, the CD steers the owner to Marillion’s website.
In return for filling in a questionnaire, the user receives an e-mail message
plus a password that lets the PC unlock the hidden tracks. This way, EMI extends
the official fan club’s database.
