Mentally ill patients may have been enrolled in research projects at a
hospital in California without giving their full, informed consent. Federal
officials have suspended research at West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital because
of these concerns.

The suspension follows six years of investigation and will put over a
thousand animal, human and laboratory studies on hold while the hospital reviews
its consent procedures and reforms the ethical panel that screens research
proposals.
