After an intense struggle in Congress, NASA has succeeded in restoring most
of its funding for 2000. The House of Representatives last week approved a
$13.65 billion budget for NASA, reversing the billion-dollar cut
originally proposed.

The new budget comes with caveats, however. NASA’s space science programmes
will lose approximately $45 million. But that’s much better than the
$184 million cut that NASA officials were braced for (New
Scientist, 2 October, p 4).
