The US government has unveiled a plan to tighten controls on genetically
modified foods. Companies will have to notify the Food and Drug Administration
before they put GM food on the market. The FDA will also draft guidelines for
food makers who want to label products GM-free. But consumer groups aren’t
satisfied. “They still don’t mandate any testing or labelling,” says Andrew
Kimbrell of the Center for Food Safety in Washington, DC.
