At next week’s PC Expo in New York, Sony will unveil the first digital stills
camera that records directly onto a blank CD. To keep its size down, the Mavica
MVC-CD1000 uses the 8-centimetre CDs created for music singles. Each $4
disc has a capacity of around 200 megabytes, storing more than 150 high-quality
images (1600 by 1200 pixels). The camera’s lithium batteries can record over a
thousand images per charge. It can also shoot up to 16 pictures a second to
capture short video clips. The camera goes on sale in August for
$1300.
