MEMBERS of the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week passed a
resolution condemning Britain’s plans to authorise research on human embryos for
tissue regeneration. The resolution carries no legal weight, but signals a lack
of support for such research elsewhere in Europe. The British government last
month backed limited “spare part” research on human embryos, but Westminster MPs
will be free to vote for or against the necessary legislation
(New Scientist, 19 August, p 4).
