Fans of the northern lights can now get e-mail alerts telling them it’s a
good time to look out for the spectacle. Scientists at the University of York
have set up the website at www.aurorawatch.york.ac.uk. From there you can sign
up to receive e-mail alerts to your computer or cellphone. The site also
contains a useful description of the solar events that cause the phenomenon. You
can also check out the two guides to building your own magnetometer. For the
simplest version you need little more than a plastic bottle and a magnet.
