Parc, birthplace of the computer mouse, screen icons and the Ethernet local
area network, is in danger of being sold off to a Silicon Valley venture
capitalist. Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center is renowned for its revolutionary
research, including projects for NASA and defence agencies. But Parc could be
the first of many sell-offs as Xerox attempts to dig itself out of a financial
hole. The photocopier pioneer is selling off its assets because of falling
sales, blamed largely on new competitors and the merging of technologies such as
printers and photocopiers.
