Britain is set to become the first country in the world to ban human cloning.
Health secretary Alan Milburn announced the new legislation, which could be in
place within months, at the International Centre for Life in Newcastle upon Tyne
last week. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority currently bans human
reproductive cloning. But should this policy change, they could grant a licence
to carry out research in this area. The new legislation is designed to ensure
human cloning can never happen. “It should be banned by law, not just by
licence,” says Milburn.
