IF YOU’RE buying a new modem you had better make sure it bears the legend
“V92 ready”. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on two major new features: the chance
to halve the tiresome delay when you log on, and the ability to pause surfing
sessions to take phone calls without losing your Internet connection.

The “V” standards for modems are set by the International Telecommunication
Union in Geneva. Today’s widely used V90 standard gets the most out of the data
