Save our tongues

An online database of endangered languages is being created by linguistics
experts, who hope to stem the loss of spoken languages worldwide as English and
Spanish take over. The project, known as the Electronic Metastructure for
Endangered Languages Data (E-MELD), will initially hold information on 10
languages. It is being set up by a consortium of universities led by Anthony
Aristar of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and will be accessible
to researchers and native speakers around the world. The first version will be
available towards the end of this year at www.linguistlist.org.
