REPUBLICANS are three times as likely as Democrats to have nightmares, says a
sleep researcher from the Santa Clara University in California. After analysing
four years’ worth of dreams from 56 college students, Kelly Bulkeley found that
half the Republicans’ dreams were nightmares compared with 18 per cent for the
Democrats.

“What’s striking is that the nightmares of people on the right are . . .
bleaker [and] there is more hopelessness,” says Bulkeley, who presented his
results last week in Santa Cruz at the annual meeting of the Association for the
